The Fossil Academy
Великобритания
Добавлен 12 янв 2013
The Fossil Academy is based in Axminster, a stones throw away from the Jurassic coast on the East Devon/Dorset border.
I'm also a fossil guide, if you fancy learning about how to find fossils around Charmouth and Lyme Regis details can be found on my website www.thefossilacademy.com for guided walks.
I now have a new workshop and (small) shop based in Axminster town centre, it’s only in the early stages but I will be running a two day course on collecting on the local beach’s and an introduction to professional fossil tools. First day will be on the beach and the second day will be in the workshop.

Late night Fossil Collect in a storm - Surprise Find!
Ey up my fossil fiends! This video has numerous video and sound quality issues, I just wanted to put it out as its something a little different. DISCLAIMER - Collecting at night is NOT recommended. It is dangerous at the best of times, I really know the beach and tides for this stretch and feel confident in going out at night. It also shows digging ex situ, this is totally different to digging in situ and I will be doing a video on this in the new year. I think a video on the Fossil Code of Conduct would be helpful for anyone visiting the Jurassic Coast to collect and hunt for fossils.

Another Ammonite repair and Prep
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.Год назад
Another little prep video, I filmed this one over a number of small sessions, it felt to me to be a little disjointed, I was really happy with the outcome of the piece so decided to post it up anyways. I'm trying to come up with some new content, really don't want it to get stagnant posting up the same stuff all the time. If there is something you would really like to see just slap down a comme...

Electric Engraver V Air Scribe - Fossil Tool workload Comparison

Testing out how much rock each pen removes in 5mins. I was pretty surprised by the results, if you are thinking of getting an electric engraver to start out with fossil prep then give this video a watch and don't forget to check out Zoic PaleoTech. TREASURE HUNT! - Ammonite collect and clean ***NOW FOUND 5/2/22***

Find Clean and hide! I've been out and hidden the fossil I found and cleaned in this video, there are 3 sentences that are clues, when I say them in the video it's a good idea to write them down. Each sentence if you work them out will give you a word, combine all three to get the location, dead easy......... Good luck and if you find it (there is a bonus beer hidden with it) please let me know...

Great video again. Is that super glue that you put on as you are working? It disappears pretty quickly...
Cheers for the kind words, yup super glue, I get it from Axminster tools, they do a thick, medium and a thin, I use the thin stuff, water like quality so has a capillary action with the cracks. Quick spray with accelerator and it goes off almost instantly. Zoic paleo tools also sell it too, I think they are a little bit better on price
Where be you... Guided tour if poss 😊😊
3 minutes prepping....17 minutes of "blah, blah, blah"
Yeah man I gotta work on that :) sorry
Go on then, how many times have you hit your thumb?
Surprising I’ve only done it a few times, I think the worst I’ve had was stiches from hitting a small rock while holding it, spun around and sliced my hand.
hi, where u find it?:)
Great to meet you on the beach/mud yesterday Dan. Thanks for all the knowledge shared.
No worries at all :)
Super nice! Enjoying the uploads mate!
Beautiful
I get it
Beautiful
Brilliant Dan ..let us know when you are open
Got the electrician coming Thursday to plumb in the compressor, few days to set up the kit and another cabinet to make for my new iron powder abrasive machine and I’ll be in there most days cleaning stuff to go straight in the shop. It’ll be nice to get back making content in the new space.
Was awesome to meet you yesterday, thanks for breaking my heart r.e the ichthyosaur bone i thought i found 😂😂, next time maybe. Probably be back in the week, i really fancy a night mission soon even if dont mind anything being out at night does add some extra excitement to the mix. Happy hunting, be down to shop soon.
Such an interesting and informative comparisson. Thanks!
Just found your channel, great content, im becoming a regular down the jurassic coast very addictive stuff, maybe see you soon. Love the music btw, The Detectorists is a great show. Happy hunting
Cheers for the kind words! Yeah love a bit of Jonny Flynn :) I'll have the shop open soon, hopefully by the end of next week, next time you are down pop in and say hello and check it out.
I sure will thats great,im keen to meet as many knowledgeable people as i can and then pass it on. The fossil collecting community is one of the most helpful and friendly group of people ive met. Share the knowledge.
there you go , fresh sub . me and my son have been watching your videos and we figured fossil collecting might just be a nice hobby for both of us to get into , we went on our first trip to a local place I say local its an hour away called Wenlock Edge we found 2 very small fossils which took us the best part of 6 hours but it was fun
That is awesome! My girls would rather be in TKMax than down the beach with me at the moment! Ukfossils.co.uk is a good site for finding places to go discoveringfossils.co.uk is another resource you could use to find some interesting places to go.
Nest time leave the band behind.
To solve the abrasion cabinet light flicker, drop your shutter speed on the camera down to 30. The lights are probably running at about 50hz so get your shutter speed under that and you should be golden. Love the vids and excitement of each piece.
Ahh cheers for that :) I’ve built a new cabinet now! Ready for the new workshop , got a little update coming this week
I need some more content! I’m completely caught up now 😂 Hope you’re well.
Got some coming really soon, just working on the new shop and workshop
@@TheFossilAcademy Looking forward to it 👍👍
In the shop open yet?
@@markstevens8293 next few weeks! Just picked up my new abrasive machine from Zoic today! Workshop almost there now will be filming an update on Thursday to go out this weekend
Love your videos, informative and entertaining, D
Great look forward to visiting. D
Did you freehand that, or did you have a pencil template on the wall? Either way, fantastic job!
Illustrator on the pc, then project it into the wall where I want it, pencil the outline, then paint :) easy peasy cheat mode!
@@TheFossilAcademyNeat idea, Happy prepping :)
Loved and subbed❤❤❤
When’s the shop open mate?
The workshop for the courses will be open for Easter, the small attached shop will open next week, I’ll be around most of the week building benches and cabinets in the workshop
That Ichthyosaur must be worth a few bob!!
It’s a cast! If you want one Craig Chivers makes and sells them, really good museum quality casts from real fossils. Think his website is natural selections

I live near Charmouth. Love the place. Hope to go out Monday. Not very experience though. Need to know what rocks to have a bash at. Practice makes perfect I suppose!
This is every kids dream this is so awesome and inspiring dude thank you for sharing
Thank you for the kind words, going to get better this year and post up more content. Going to try and keep it fresh
Great video. The length is just fine with me :)
Great fish !And my brain doesnt work fine as well :D don't worry !Keep up the good work .
What is the amphibian fossil o the cabinet behind you?
Sorry for the late reply! It’s a marine reptile, an ichthyosaur from Lyme Regis, this one is a cast from a real fossil, was broken at work so I rescued it and stuck it back together, still need to finish it off and touch it in.
@@TheFossilAcademy thank you for responding. I'd love to find something like that one day. My area is mostly Cretatious, I think. Trilobites, horncorals, bivalves, etc. Missori,USA
Beautiful.
Thank you! Cheers!
Good to see you back mate. A true professional.
Much appreciated, sorry for the late response! Been really busy getting the new workshop and shop finished, some videos to come on that soon
Hi mate, with the air abrasive work, how do you figure out what PSI to use for different materials like pyrite and calcite? I'm just starting to get into air abrasive work and am pretty confused about what PSI to use. Also, how much does iron powder actually stain the ammonites? Ive heard that it darkens them, but how much is this the case? Awesome finds by the way, an absolute beast of a prom and a fish! What more could you want!
Evening! I’ve not actually got a machine that will take iron powder yet, hopefully getting one built pretty soon. The Comco blaster I use has a dial on it for pressure, I tend to use it full whack most of the time but dial it down a bit when I’m getting onto delicate middles on ammonites and the like. I’ll change the tips too when doing detail work. The pressure going into the machine is 110psi, not too sure what it is after turning it down on the machine, it just reads slow to fast on the dial :) the powder I use in it is dolomite, not as aggressive as aluminium oxide. The iron powder works best with certain rocks, especially good with the green ammonite nodules from Stonebarrow. I think just using it you’ll soon be able to work out when you have to dial it down and when you can turn it up to eleven. Hope this helps. D
@@TheFossilAcademy Thanks so much! That really helps.
See ya new year 🤙
Not just a pretty face! Where in Axminster is your shop?
It’s on Churchstreet through the archway next to the arts Cafe in the old courthouse building, it’s a work in progress!
Lovely, please keep the content coming, yours are by far my favourite fossil videos!
